SUMMER WEAVES By Dastkar

With summer breezes wafting the air, change is inevitable. The Summer Bazaar organised by the Dastkar caters to this demand with an all-round offer of craft based items for personal wear garnered from the best weaving traditions of the country, home décor necessities, with special wear saris taking centre stage. In keeping with the seasonal mood of a breezy change, the organisers have on offer a variety of handloom weaves in cool breathable fabrics embellished with distinctive craft techniques, garnered from over 70 artisan craft hubs, pan-India. The choice picks that are must-see, must-buy, are the wooden hand block prints from Bagru village near Jaipur. For those with a preference for the resist dyeing and printing fabrics of Ajrakh in Rajasthan, the choice is mind boggling. Others can have their pick of Sanganer prints in flimsy voiles and cottons, with floral and architecture motifs that are finely imprinted all over the gossamer surfaces. The Bagh print from Madhya Pradesh are a craft item that must find place in every wardrobe this season as the cloth is defined by a deeper-toned backgrounds on which the prints are bleached in contrast, making it a statement piece of personal wear.
For those who lay emphasis on the density of cloth weaves, there are handloom picks of gossamer lightness, such as chanderi and kota, the silky sophistication in Benarasi and Maheshwari offers, colourful dotted yardage in bandhini and shibori, the jamdani tradition of geometric patterns as also batik and appliqué choices.

Not to be overlooked, homes too, can be given a summery freshness by colourful floor coverings in flat kilim weaves replacing the pile carpets in wool and silk. There is a range of products like Ikat handlooms and crochet and zardozi items, for embellishments, such as cushions and spreads.

The ‘icing’ on this show is a celebration of the Indian sari with an exclusive collection of sarees from the looms of the foremost masters and designer labels on hand. Rounding off the visit is a selection of food treats in the way of refreshing snacks, desserts and beverages. Riveting cultural performances make visitors linger on, taking away the tedium and transforming the experience into a conversation starter with the arts and crafts of India.
