The arrival of monsoon is a welcome respite from the summer heat. But on the flip side, the wet spell is also associated with leaking roofs, seepage, and in some cases, collapse of buildings due to structural failure. It is a false notion that little can be done to prevent water-related issues once a structure has been constructed. Now, a range of products are easily available in the market that can ensure maximum protection from water damage right in the beginning at the construction phase, and even as an after-construction solution to protect homes and buildings. Read on to get a better understanding of the underlying causes of the problem and the range of remedies and solutions available to effectively address the problem at hand:

What causes water damage

Shoddy construction and use of sub-standard materials can cause cracks and crevices  in concrete structures that allow water to penetrate. These are not just an eye-sore aesthetically, but also pose a hazard to the structural strength of the building. Identifying the root cause and prompt corrective measures to deal with any seepage or leakage is important to prevent the problem from worsening.

Installing drainage system and maintaining it is the first logical step that must be undertaken from the construction phase itself. A proper drainage system must, therefore, be installed on priority basis if your home doesn’t have one.

Awareness is the key to prevention

As the saying goes — A stitch in time saves nine. Thus, following basic principles of water proofing at relevant stages of construction is a sure shot way of ensuring a water-proof structure that stands the test of time. Design and construction elements to mitigate the danger at the design stage, provision for effective drainage systems, use of suitable materials such as bitumen or silicone-based water proofing systems in terrace and walls along with water repellant paints and emulsions are also effective in the fight against seepage, leakage and dampness.

For new constructions, admixtures, plasticisers and integral water-proofing compounds are available to provide an effective barrier against water from cutting through concrete. These can be conveniently built-in when constructing structures like foundation and retaining walls in basement, wet areas (toilet, balcony and kitchen), terrace, overhead and underground tanks, swimming pools, podium slab etc.

For the water-proofing solutions to be effective, critical components of the structure such as block walls and underground foundation need to be in top shape.

Solutions to check out

There are several corrective measures that can be adopted as per the problem and structural composition of the building.

  • Liquid waterproofing is generally adopted for concrete and plasters. This innovative waterproofing solution acts as a tonic for cement and can be applied from the foundation to the roof of the building. This cement additive is specially formulated to increase the life span of buildings by preventing the development of cracks thereby preventing leakage and rusting.
  • Water proofing compounds are increasingly becoming popular not only as a deterrent to water ingress but also as an aid for healthy construction, emulsion and protective coatings to limit the effect of vagaries of weather on buildings.

Five water proofing solutions that are currently preferred are:

  • Conventional systems would include box-type water proofing with impervious stone slabs.
  • Crystalline waterproofing systems and flexible membrane water proofing systems involve application of chemicals on the surface of concrete.
  • Chemical coatings react with the soft by-products of the cement hydration process and form hard crystals. These crystals lodge themselves in the concrete pores, thereby making it impervious.
  • Water-repellant impregnates are silicones which due to their low-viscosity impart repellant property to the surface on application.

The monsoons are almost always a much wanted respite from the sultry summer heat, but they also bring with them their own set of issues. For instance, the rains and the humidity can create difficulty in maintaining the furniture health, making them look unsightly or probably even ruining them. Interior Designer Punam Kalra, Director of I’m the Centre of Applied Arts, gives us some simple tips to keep these monsoon blues away.

  • Use a little distance– Walls get damp during the monsoon and transfer its moisture to the surface of the furniture. Avoid this by moving your furniture away from the wall. This will reduce the amount of moisture it attracts and keep the furniture dry.
  • Ventilation is important– Ensure that your interiors are well ventilated. The free passage of air reduces the amount of humidity that collects on the furniture and keeps them dry.
  • Avoid wet clothes– Avoid using wet clothes to clean furniture. Instead of a wet cloth, use a gentle, dry cloth to avoid dust accumulation. Dust absorbs moisture which may result in softening of the furniture over time.
  • Don’t get too close to the windows Try to keep your furniture is away from the windows. Your painted furniture can fade due to the moisture seeping through the windows.
  • Maintenance instead of renovation- During this season, it’s a bad idea to start with any renovation. Buildings, painting and carpentry are most effective when there is no moisture in the air. The Monsoon is rather a time for providing some TLC and maintenance to your furniture.

As we already know how actors have to go through character changes, one wonders how do they pull off the planning of multiple looks and what all goes into the styling for the same? Is it always just the stylist? Or do the actors get to take a call? Clearing the air on this, Shrenu shared, “It was me, my producer Deepti ma’am, my stylist Reena and the creative team on set who collaborated on how to make the new look perfect. We all actually went shopping and hunted for clothes, making sure everything goes right with the look- from makeup to accessories to heels, everything was handpicked by us.”

Dipti Kalwani has produced a fantastic show with excellent production values and the show has been generating a lot of curiosity

Actor Rehaan Roy who is currently playing inspector Parv in Guddan Tumse Na Ho Payega will soon be seen in a disguise which is inspired from Ranveer Singh’s look in Ram Leela. Speaking about the look Rehaan says,”Parv comes back to Jindal House for revenge. So he comes in disguise so that no one can recognise him. This entire sequence is going to be really dramatic and very interesting. I hope the audience will enjoy this.” Speaking about the reference of Ram Leela Rehaan says,”I didn’t have any role to play in this. The whole look was conceptualised by my creative team. It takes about 2 hours to get ready for this look. Specially to attach the beard and moustache and tie the turban, it takes a long time. It’s not just time consuming, it’s also very difficult to carry the look as the turban is really heavy and tight and I have to wear it the whole day.” Do you idolise Ranveer Singh? “I won’t call idolise, but yes I get inspired by Ranveer Singh a lot In many ways. He’s a great actor and a style icon. His confidence, his hard work and specially his public behaviour inspires me a lot.”

There couldn’t have been a better gift for Anveshi Jain than the launch of her new song ‘Mind Blow’ as well as the mobile app on her birthday (June 25).

Grateful to everyone who has put their efforts in making it possible, Jain says, “I couldn’t have asked for anything better as a gift on my birthday. These wonderful people I have been associated with have been so thoughtful to release my song and the app together on my special day. I am overwhelmed with gratitude.”

‘Mind Blow’ is the second track by Sukhbir Gill after ‘Next Level’ – which became a massive hit among the music lovers. Produced by ‘Slay record’, a Mohali based company primarily into Punjabi music and movies, ‘Mind Blow’ has been shot beautifully with Anveshi.

As for the app, it has been created by Armsprime Media Private Limited, which is business tycoon Raj Kundra’s company. Anveshi came up with this idea of having an app of her own after a fan created a mobile application of the same sort, and was highly lauded by the audience. “There were 40 thousand downloads of that app in a day, which is quite a big number. It was then that I decided to have my app, and fortunately, at the same time, I got approached by Armsprime Private Limited. They worked hard on it, and it’s finally here,” she says.

Explaining how fans can use the app to be in direct contact with her, Anveshi says, “I am going to be personally designing various sections of this app for the convenience. Also, I will make sure that I handle it by myself.”

“From my unseen pictures to music videos, my dating vlogs to my brand new shows, you will find everything on the app. Also, I will be frequently going live to interact with my fans. This way, not only my fans will come to know me more closely, but also I will get to know who my biggest fans are. I will be updated about the craziest fans of mine based on their activities on my app. They will get a chance to meet me or may be a shout-out sometimes,” she concludes.”

Actor Malhar Pandya, who is part of the show Aghori, is confident that it will be loved by the audience. The actor adds that he loves his character. “My expectations are really high because the character which I have got is like my dream character. It’s like a superhero as he has got powers and all, it somewhat reminds me of Hulk. Today’s generation would definitely like it. I am working out since long as it’s my passion and here I have got an opportunity to show my physique and talent and I am really grateful to Zee TV and the production house who gave me a chance to prove myself. I am very happy playing Indra in Aghori,” he says.

Ask him if he relates to his character, and he says, “I do not really relate to it because my character Indra is jealous of others and in real life I am not at all like that. I really don’t care who is doing what in life, I am happy with what I have in my own world. In fact, if someone is doing well in their life, I get happy for them. It gives me a proud feeling that my friends or relatives are doing so well in life.”

Talking about his physique, he says, “It’s all about diet. In films, you get time to develop a particular character or built up a particular kind of physic, at least you get 15-20 days for it. A daily soap, on the other hand, is challenging because you don’t get as much as time you get for films. Every single day I work out before going on the set. I am following a proper diet. I am playing Aghori, so according to that, his building had to be a little bulky and a little chiseled, so I have to manage that. During the shoot, following a diet is a little difficult because of every day, if I have a 9 am shift so I usually wake up at 4.30 am and cook my whole day’s food. I pack my bag for the whole day, so that takes a lot of time and energy.”

However, the actor doesn’t feel that having six-pack abs is a necessity in TV “I don’t think so because six packs are something which cannot be maintained for a long time and not at all after, 15 to 16 years because hormones change and that’s why it cannot be maintained. If you diet properly, it will be maintained but you cannot diet for a long time as then it gets you irritated because our body needs junk food at times,” he says.

After flooring a number of fans for Bekaboo web show this year, our B-town damsel Ananditaa is all geared up for first international project.

Ananditaa, is now craving her way internationally. “I have finished shooting for a short film ‘Grim Reaper’ on a topic which, though is making headlines abroad, is yet to make an impact back home.”

“The Mexican director Arturo Alanis Garza has collaborated with one person from the US and an Indian. I am grateful to have been travelling extensively this year for fashion gigs in Europe”. She was a part of the Old Blighty

“Western filmmakers have great clarity of thought and also treat artists with a lot of respect.”

“The shooting of the Indie short was done in Lonavala. we are hoping to make rounds in film festivals in India and abroad. Eventually, we’d want to convert it into a feature,” adds Ananditaa, who has also done other digital shows such as Inside Edge and Untag
